Planning the Impossible

1,037 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: The Nursery
Location: Astrometrics

Lieutenant Jasad Yuvek walked inside of the Engineering Lab and nodded to the gathered officers who had arrived before him. This small gathering between the ship's Helm, Ops, Tactical and Engineering Officers was necessary to properly plot just how the ship was going to be able to handle conducting both a Tactical assault, Starfighter Carrier Operation, and a hostage extraction all without bringing down the might and the weight of the Tal'Shiar on top of them.

"Greetings everyone," He said as cheerfully as he could muster. "So anybody have any idea how we pull this off without dying?" He asked.

Nezuko tapped some words onto her PADD, which the device read out. “Regarding the hostage rescue portion, could we find a way to use the transporter without lowering our shields? I have been running simulations with isolinear tags and veridium patches. We can get a lock on hostages but tunneling the matter stream through shields remains a challenge.

"How close would we have to be to the actual hostages to even attempt to beam through the shields?" Lt. Yuvek responded. "I'm assuming that after we launch the fighters the Tokyo will need to be at a safe enough distance to avoid the heavy firepower from the facility." He added.

“I may be able to pull a trick of two from the Cardassian playbook here; their transporters operate on a slightly different frequency than standard and I may be able to adjust one of our cargo bay transporters to the same; it will take me a days work to ensure its safe.” Sarah tilted her head slightly, resembling a dog ever so slightly as she did so.

Lt. Yuvek looked at the screen for several moments. "That might work; however, I'm assuming it will take a significant amount of energy to maintain the transporters while also keeping the shields up." He said as he turned to look at Nezuko.

"It'll take a hell of a lot of power to maintain constant tactical, maneuvering thrusters, as well as tunneling through raised shields to beam out the hostages. Where is all of that power going to come from?" He asked the Operations Chief.

"With transporter modifications proposed by Lieutenant Graesyn lowering the power requirements," the mechanical voice said for Nezuko (and she knew that Cardassian transporter tech, while less advanced in many ways, also drew less power), "I believe we have enough power in reserves to push a transporter beam through shields, if only for a very short burst. Definitely our shields and probably also an enemy's. The issue is not only power however. Changing to Cardassian frequencies will help but it is not enough."

“We can set up a secondary reactor to augment our power; we’d have to convert a spare bay temporarily to accommodate it… it would only help so much however. There is still the matter of ensuring the Tokyo doesn’t sustain critical damage in the time it is within range of Tal’Shiar weaponry and considering they have recently changed to a particularly nasty variety of plasma weaponry… that is something we have to prepare and adjust for.” Sarah spoke, pulling up diagrams and schematics from ships that had encountered the Tal’Shiar in the past few months.

"That's going to be the even more difficult part." Lt. Yuvek replied. "Once the battle starts, the Tal'Shiar will undoubtedly throw everything they have at us." He added. Although, he recalled the last time they were boarded it was right after the Romulan Ambassador had been killed in a transporter accident and the Tal'Shiar immediately attacked the Tokyo without warning.

"How large of a window of time will we need to do the stream-tunnel-thing you suggested?" Lt. Yuvek asked.

"I'd like to say it will only put us in range for a minimal amount of time but I'll need at least 90 seconds to get a full lock and capture the hostages in our pattern buffers... in theory I can hold them in the buffers for a short time before we have to rematerialize them but I wouldn't do it for much longer than about half an hour if we don't want to risk compromising any of their individualities."

"I've seen reports of storing people longer," Nezuko's PADD said for her. "Including in combat situations. Leave that problem with me for a bit."

"90 seconds. . ." Lieutenant Yuvek said as he ran the different scenarios in his mind.

"Well, if we had more time, then we could plan something more reliable." He said. "This is what we have to work with and it's gonna have to do." He said with obvious resignation in his voice as he stood and faced the group.

"We've got a few hours left until departure, so I'll get started on creating a few simulations to at least see how this will unfold." He said thoughtfully.

“Lieutenant; when you run your simulations try augmenting our shields with a tachyon sublayer. It might pull us out of phase just enough to avoid some of the more major damage that can occur in the span of 90 seconds and I can easily adapt the transporter adjustments to compensate for it once you find a shield frequency and tachyon ratio that you are fairly certain will work…. If things come down to it I can make adjustments on the fly but I would like to go in prepared.” Sarah replied, her head tilted in thought.

"I'll have to make sure the simulations can factor in variety of frequencies and ratios in order to see which ones give us a higher rate of survival." He said. "I'd prefer to go into a mission with more concrete plans, but I guess this is the best we can do." He said woefully.

"I'll get started on it now. If anybody has any further suggestions, I'll be on the bridge." He said as he turned to depart.

Nezuko looked to Sarah and followed her out. She would help with the simulations. They would be ready. They would get it done.
