Physical Description | Amphea are humanoids, in many ways indistinguishable from any human. Their eye colours are usually bright colours, such as teal, violet, mint, gold, silver, or, as is the case with Nezuko, pink. Hair colours are often two-tone, changing to a brighter colour at the ends as they oxidize. Nezuko’s hair is dark brown, almost black, with the tips a vibrant red. The most distinguishing feature of an Amphea, however, is their breathing apparatus. Amphei Prime’s atmosphere is a mix of argon and nitrate, the latter being the gas which their bodies metabolize. To live aboard Starfleet vessels (or indeed in any Class M environment) they must wear a special cylindrical apparatus, which covers the mouth. The apparatus has a battery and replicator which produces enough nitrate and argon for her to breathe indefinitely. The electronics in it are hardened against electromagnetic interference. Their noses are not connected to the airway; simple muscles inside can expand the cavity by approximately 30% to draw in air from any environment for scent. Amphea evolved as carnivores, and have pointed teeth (though these are rarely seen by outsiders). Their fingernails are pointed sharp. Amphea are mute, communicating with each other using a form of sign language, and with other species with gestures or by writing. Physically, Amphea are otherwise little different than humans. Nezuko resembles a girl in her late teens, short and slim, her hair long and kept loose. Her skin is pale, a common tone for her people. |

Personal History | Nezuko and her twin brother Tanjiro were born in the capital city of the planet Amphei Prime in Federation year 2367. Their parents, Hazuki and Yuria, were mid-level administrators in the planetary government in the years leading up to First Contact. Hazuki worked with the senior leadership while Yuria worked in the space program. The Federation starship USS Malinche arrived in orbit of Amphei Prime four years before Nezuko was born, having detected a warp drive test from the Amphean space program. Nezuko’s father was on the team which worked between the Prime Minister’s office and the Federation embassy, while her mother worked with Starfleet engineers to begin integrating Amphean and Federation technology, such as comms networks and power supplies. Among the most important problems to solve was life support, given the Amphea need to breathe nitrate instead of oxygen. But Nezuko, as well as Tanjiro and their younger sisters Kaede and Miyori, never knew a life without knowledge of the Federation, and always had close contact with Federation people. As a child, Nezuko went as often as she could to see her mother’s work. She would get to play with the prototypes made by her people, using experience from Starfleet visitors who had to help integrate Amphei Prime into galactic society without breaking their Prime Directive. She also got to try Starfleet technology sometimes, and even visited their embassy with the new breathing apparatus which would let Amphea visit other worlds, including Earth. As a teen, her parents took her entire family to a reception aboard USS Malinche — which returned on the twentieth anniversary of First Contact for a celebration. Seeing the starship was enough to clinch her decision. She would apply for Starfleet Academy (though she was not the first, there having been several exchange officers and six successful new applicants in the previous years). At age eighteen, she was accepted. She said farewell to her family and took an eight-week journey by various civilian transit lines to get to Earth in time for classes. For the rest of her life, she would remain in fairly frequent contact with her family back home. She was isolated at first at the Academy, finding communication very difficult, but eventually found a best friend in Diare Hibor, a Betazoid linguistics student who could pick up the essence of her meanings quite clearly. They became roommates in second year, and were inseparable until graduation. During summer breaks, they traveled much, and even managed to rent a runabout and visited Amphei Prime (Diare wearing a space suit for most of the visit, but with a new Class M tent-town having since been built at the spaceport to accommodate tourists and traders). Study-wise, Nezuko shifted between engineering and operations, eventually ending up in the latter. She was excellent with computers (physical units and programs) and kept on hand a heavily modified PADD which she used for communication (typing and displaying messages for others). She did very well, earning attention from her teachers — though often as a curiosity. In 2389, she got her first assignment as a junior operations officer aboard USS Susquehanna, but she never seemed to shake the feeling that she was offered the assignment by a First Officer who simply wanted to meet an Amphea. Unfortunately, Diare couldn’t follow, but the two kept in touch over subspace and are still good friends. Diare reached out to a few people her brother knew aboard the Susquehanna and had them help Nezuko get integrated into the ship’s social circle. From that point on, she was noticed less for her strange eyes and breathing tube and more for her abilities. In 2394, she was given the position of Assistant Chief Ops Officer and promoted to Lieutenant junior grade. In 2396, she was recommended for Chief Ops Officer of USS Tokyo. |
