Mission: The Elachi Return
Location: Sick bay

Previously on Star Trek Tokyo:

"Sure there is." Mako said. "There's light grey and there's dark grey, but what does this have to do with the bad man and the good woman?"

"Well, Mako, daddy was trained on the principles of Admiral Miyahara, the bad man." Takeshi explained. "And yes, there were some things he did that I didn't agree with, like not allowing civilians aboard his vessel, but I saw him as a good overall commander, and I still do. Now, going back to the grey spectrum, I'd put him at a fairly light shade of grey. In fact, the only reason I'd even call him the bad man at all is because of his policy on civilians."

"Okay," Mako replied uneasily. "But, if the bad man's supposed to be good, then what about the good woman?"

"Well, you see, Mako; daddy only very recently came under the good woman's command." Takeshi explained. "And almost the whole entire time, she's been nothing but suspicious and distrustful of me. In fact, the only reason I'd call her the good woman at all is because of her civilian policy. In terms of grey, I'd put her at a very dark shade."

"So, you think the good woman is... evil?" Mako quivered.

"Yes, Mako: That's exactly what daddy's getting at." Takeshi responded.

And now the continuation...

After dinner wrapped up and Sayuki had cleaned everything up, the Nakazatos stuck around Takeshi's bedside until Zack began whining because he was tired. Sayuki wanted Mako to come with her and her brother back to their quarters so she could go to bed as well, but Mako wanted to remain with her father 'until the end', so Sayuki had gone to put Zack to bed and would come back to get Mako before visitation hours ended, leaving father and daughter alone together.

"Daddy, sing me a lullaby before I have to go..." Mako mumbled.

"Okay, kiddo: One lullaby." Takeshi replied. "But you've got to promise me not to fall asleep now: Mommy said your brother's getting heavy, so you must be really heavy, and I don't want mommy to throw her back out carrying you back."

"Okay, daddy, I won't fall asleep: I promise." Mako said.

"Very well, then..." Takeshi said.

Mako curled up next to her father. Takeshi put his free arm around his daughter, and in a soft, soothing voice, began to sing:

"When you get to the top,
You ever been to the top?
Just listen, let me tell ya,
Hear what you're missing,
Shut up and listen...
In the beginning, you'll get crazy,
Spending all the money you've got,
No more women to love you now...
You've got to go and leave town.
Back on the rocks, back on the rocks, baby,
You've got to keep your mind together.
Back on the rocks, back on the rocks, baby,
You've got to go and live forever...
"

As Takeshi finished, Mako stirred slightly.

"Mmf... Is it time to go already?"

"Soon, Mako:" Takeshi replied. "Mommy will be back any minute now."

"Mkay..." Mako sighed. "I'm going to miss you, daddy..."

"I'm going to miss you too, kiddo." Takeshi responded. "But, I'll be back tomorrow: You can count on that."

A few more minutes passed, with Mako lamenting about having to leave before Sayuki finally showed up to take Mako back to their quarters.

"I told you you were going to have to pry her off me." Takeshi told his wife. "Have a good night, dear."

"You too, Takeshi." Sayuki responded.

"Bye, daddy!" Mako said.

"Bye, kiddo!" Takeshi responded. "See you tomorrow!"

Takeshi watched Mako waving at him until she and Sayuki passed through the curtains and were gone. Once they had left, Takeshi let out a big sigh...

... Tonight was going to be a tough one, for the whole Nakazato family...
