John dropped his sea bag at the entrance to Engineering, then opened the doors. He had been able to feel the pulse of the core, and it made him feel alive. Since his live training at the academy, the thrum of a working warp core made him feel better. "Computer, please assign Chief Engineer Strayus to Alpha shift, and alert the acting chief. Command code Strayus Beta Six Six." The computer chirped it's recognition of the command before falling silent.

Running his hand over the diagnostics table, he smiled. Plugging his padd in, Andi the AI started running diagnostics and other searches. After twelve years of working on it, she ran smoother than anything and only answered to him. It was programmed only to show up for Stayus, and only react to his commands. It also never trully entered the computer system of the ship, but made a burrow that she could enter and exit from, assisting Engineering in its problems.

"John, everything seems to be working fine," the padd said in a female voice. "There is a small coolant leak in the aft Jeffries tube, ten meters to your left. Nothing life threatening and doesn't appear to be radioactive in any way." John nodded, then started work on making sure that his section was running smoothly. Something he would pride himself on.
