761 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Andromeda
Location: Ready Room
Timeline: Current

With recent events Dana had been one of few onboard the Tokyo who’d understood the significance of the symbol that had appeared on the ship’s workstations and monitors. The Omega particle, although the Borg had called it particle 010. Something that all Borg regarded with near-reverence, as being ‘perfection’ and to assimilate it at all costs.

Arriving outside Taiga’s Ready Room door she pressed the chime waiting until she heard the call for admittance before walking inside.

The doors opened immediately. Taiga had forgotten that Dana would also know about the Omega Particle from her time in the Borg Collective. "In." She called simply.

“Captain” Dana offered a polite nod of her head as she came directly to the point. “I came to talk to you about the Omega particles.”

"Let me guess, you know the same, if not more about it?" Taiga asked. "I forgot that Daxer wasn't the only ex-borg on board.

Dana nodded. “We most likely know the same things about it, I’m not sure how much you’ve been told about what the Borg know though.” She paused before continuing.

“The Borg learned of the existence of the Omega particles in 2145 after the assimilation of thirteen species. The process of which started with Species 262, whose history referenced a powerful substance, the information led the Borg to Species 263. After following the trail of myth regarding the Omega particles for many years, the Borg managed to assimilate a species with more useful data. They then were able to synthesise a single molecule of Omega that remained stable for one-trillionth of a nanosecond.” Dana paused for a moment. “The experiments the Borg conducted on Omega destroyed a total of twenty-nine Borg vessels and six hundred thousand drones. The Borg regard the Omega with near-reverence as they believed it to exist in a flawless state, this "perfection", meant that all Borg were ordered to assimilate it at any cost. If they knew where we were, and that Omega was here, this place would be swarming with Borg ships. Fortunately they don’t know so that’s not something we have to worry about.”

Taiga nodded. "Thankfully the Borg aren't here." She replied. "You should be aware of the Omega Directive from your assimilated knowledge?"

“Yes Captain” Dana nodded. “Starfleet directives are to destroy the Omega particles at all costs, something that is extremely dangerous if not done correctly. With your permission I’d at least like to see the Omega particles? All Borg have been instilled with the…” she paused. “Shall we say, longing?, to search for Omega to see it would satisfy that longing.”

"I'm going to need you here on the Tokyo." Taiga stated. "Your expertise will be needed when dealing with Omega."

Dana nodded. “Of course Captain, I wont be taking any risks where Omega is concerned.”

"I need a way to possibly use Omega to get this ship home. If we can't find a way, I intend to destroy them." Taiga stated. "Now, how do I do that?"

“Destroy Omega?” Dana gave Taiga a blank stare for a moment. “Extremely cautiously Captain, one mistake and it'll kill us all. You could use a harmonic resonance chamber, or gravimetric torpedos.”

"That's what I have to do if we can't utilise it." Taiga stated. "Technically, I shouldn't even be considering using Omega, however I'm not one that sticks strictly to the rules." She looked the other woman up and down. "I want you to start looking into both methods of destroying Omega. In case we need them."

Dana nodded. “Yes Captain, for what it’s worth I won’t take any risks. I may have the Borg drive to want to see it, but I won’t endanger anyone by doing it.”

Taiga nodded understandably. "Since you know more about Omega than anyone else... apart from Daxer... on the ship. I want you to lead this project. You are to keep it under hush to the lower ranks, but use any personnel and resources you need." She told her. "Make this a top priority. Omega is dangerous, as you know it has the ability to destroy subspace. If that happens a five minute trip at warp could take years, I am not risking our ability to travel home."

Dana nodded. “Understood Captain. I’ll do my best.” She had to admit to a certain sense of apprehension, but she wasn’t going to let her new Commanding Officer down.

"Good, dismissed." Taiga said.
