Mission: Preserving The Past
Location: USS Tokyo Sickbay

Previously on Star Trek Tokyo:

"She's still alive." Jen said somewhat absently, as she continued her scan. "She's in really bad shape though."

Shauna panted as she came to a stop at the top of the bank. Her eyes opened wide upon seeing the young girl now being scanned by Daxer. "Ah... crap..." she said as she made her way down the bank. "This isn't looking good..."

"I hate to be 'that person', but the Prime Directive..." Shauna began to say.

"To hell with the prime directive." Jen said, looking up to see who else had arrived behind her. Without waiting for anyone to reply, she tapped her COMM badge. "Away team to Tokyo! Medical emergency! Two to beam directly to sickbay!"

"Locking onto you now." Shaw from the Tokyo's transporter room replied. "Beaming you directly to sickbay."

And now the continuation...

The general quiet of sickbay was interrupted as two transporter beams appeared. Jennifer Daxer materialized on the floor, looking down at a young Native American girl. "We've got a live one here!" She called out, as she moved to put pressure on the girl's head where she was bleeding out. "She's bleeding out!"

Amu who had been filling in as acting chief medical officer rushed over. Being nearly at full term herself, she wasn't exactly the fastest person on the ship. "Get her onto the biobed!" She ordered simply. Several other medical officers rushed over.

"Commander..." Amu said. "You're going to have to explain this to Captain Aisaka... let us look her over, but I suggest you get her down here."

"I'll deal with the Captain." Jen said as she picked up the girl, and laid her on the bio bed. She refused to move her hand, until one of the nurses took over. "She fell down an embankment after she spotted us and took off running. I'm sure the Captain will agree that innocent lives are not acceptable as colateral damage."

Amu nodded and called over a few nurses. "Lets start by checking her head injuries." She said calmly running her tricorder over the girls forehead. "Sogns of concussion and a broken skull." She looked up at Daxer. "It could have been a lot worse..."

Ensign Wallace was assisting Amu and was tending to the girls broken leg. "I'm detecting breaks in her right leg, three clean breaks and one not clean."

"You tend to those, I'll tend to her head injuries." Amu ordered.

Wallace nodded as he rushed off and brought back the bone stitcher. Amu loaded a hypospray and injected it into the young girls neck. Using a smaller stitcher she pulled back the girls hair and began work on her skull. "I'll have to stitch her skull back together slowly, I don't want to risk damage to her brain."

"Gotcha," Wallace replied as he gently maneuvered and began to lay the girls leg back onto position. "The clean breaks will heal nicely, as for the unclean break we're looking at a lengthy recovery process."

"Understood. We'll deal with that later. Carry on."

[30 minutes later]

Amu wiped the sweat from her forehead. The young girl was now laid peacefully on the biobed. She turned around to Daxer, "She's going to be alright. We've managed to repair all the damage, but there's no telling how bad the concussion is until she wakes up."

"It would be best if she were to wake up on the surface." Daxer replied simply. She knew the consequences of cultural contamination, and wanted to limit it as much as she could. "The less contamination the better."

It was at that moment that the doors of the sickbay opened and Taiga walked in. The room fell silent at the captains arrival, and eyes watched as she made her way over towards the surgical bed. She stopped and looked the girl up and down.

Then slowly she turned to Amu and Daxer. "Ok. I'm going to need a damn good explanation right now..."

"She was hiding in some bushes when we started our investigation of the Obelisk. It's likely she was already there when my team beamed down." Jen started in perfect Vulcan fashion. For the moment, her emotions were in check, and almost completely suppressed. She understood Taiga's concern, but felt confident the woman would understand her reasons for violating the Prime Directive. "When she fled, we still hadn't been able to identify her, and I was ordered to keep her from getting away, so I chased her."

"During the chase, she fell down an embankment, resulting in injuries that were immediately life threatening." Daxer added to finish the main explanation. She didn't give the woman a chance to say more, before she did something that was generally very out of character for her... She used pure Vulcan logic against Taiga. "Before you object, be aware that I made a judgement call. Considering the spirit of Federation principles, logic dictates that innocent lives are not acceptable collateral damage."

Taiga ran a few fingers through the girls jet black hair. "I'd have done the same thing." She said simply. "We're out here primarily to explore and discover new life. Not destroy it." She looked up at Jen. "If you hadn't of done what you did, then you wouldn't be a good officer. I trust your judgement Jen. It's made things a little harder, but there's no price on anyone's life, even if they are of another world."

"As I was telling the Doctor, I believe it's best that she is back on the surface when she wakes up, though she may still need additional medical attention." Daxer stood, looking at Taiga. The two had been friends for quite some time, and had grown to trust each other immensely. "What she potentially saw when we arrived was bad enough. Having her wake up here would be much worse."

"I would advise against that..." Amu interrupted. "She sustained a serious head injury. She needs to wake up under supervision. Then we can determine if there's any additional damage or loss of cognitive functions." Amu explained. "Shes Human, so a memory wipe can easily be done once I'm happy with her."

"Then I should be here when she wakes up, as I will be the only one she'd recognize from the surface." Jen replied quickly. "If I'm lucky, maybe I can keep her from completely freaking out."

"I'd also like counsellor Johnson to assist you." Taiga said. She tapped her comm badge. "Aisaka to Counsellor Johnson, report to sickbay."

“On my way Captain” Talia’s response was a prompt one.

It didn’t take long for Talia to reach Sickbay, walking in she offered a polite nod of her head as she looked around those gathered. “You asked for me Captain?”

Taiga motioned to the young girl now sleeping on the biobed. "It seems we have a guest. Commander Daxer beamed her up for treatment. She was injured. However, she's going to have a lot of questions when she wakes up." She explained. "I believe you're the best person to deal with those questions."

Talia nodded. “I’ll certainly do my best Captain. I take it we’re not able to return her to the surface prior to waking her?”

"I have advised against that. She gained a serious head injury, so we need to ensure it has no lasting effects before we return her." Amu responded. "Even today we still don't know everything about the brain."

“Understood” Talia nodded. “Then I suggest a more private area if possible? Either that or putting up privacy screening to limit what surroundings she can see.”

"I can organise that." Amu said.

"Good." Taiga replied. She turned to Daxer. "I expect a full report by the end of the day," she told her simply. "Let me know when she wakes up." With that said, Taiga turned on a heel and walked out of the ship's sickbay.
