BACKPOST - Like Mother, Like Daughter - Kala's Day - Pt 3

Posted on Mon Feb 27th, 2017 @ 10:48am by Lieutenant Alex Walker & Meru Walker

1,140 words; about a 6 minute read

Mission: Behind Closed Doors
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: Two Days after arrival at Starbase

OLD:

Kala discreetly shifted her top so she could nurse Hayley. Meru watched, satisfied her daughter had the hang of it. Kala’s satisfied look as she lay back and closed her eyes told her Kala was doing well, tired but okay.

NEW:

[hour later]

Kala looked up from the chair as the door swooshed open, Alex along with Sean & Mikayla entering. Mikayla was bubbling along about something and suddenly stopped, her eyes opening wide as she saw her older sister. “Kala!” she cried out, only to be shushed by her father.

Excitedly, she went over to her older sister. “Can I see?”

Meru looked at Kala, who gave her mother a nod yes. “Mikayla honey. You can hold one of the babies if your are careful, okay?”

“Yes Mom.” Mikayla nodded excitedly. She wanted to hold a baby and Mom was letting her.

“Go sit on the couch and I will bring Hayley over so you can hold her.” Mikayla didn’t need to be told a second time as she hopped up on the couch. Meru picked up her granddaughter and went over to Mikayla. Sitting down beside her, Meru carefully placed the newborn in Mikayla’s arms. “She’s only a few hours old so you have to be careful when you hold her sweety.”

Mikayla grinned as her mother handed her the baby. It was so small, like her dollies, but felt warm in her arms, and softer. She stared down at Hayley, a big smile on her face. “She’s so small Mommy. And soft.”

“Babies usually are when they’re this young. You were too when you were born.”

“The babies in your tummy will be this small mummy?”

“Maybe sweetie. Babies can be big or small when they come out. Your brother Sean was big when he was born, you were on the smaller side, and your older sisters were about average.”

“Can I have a baby in my tummy too?” Mikayla blurted out.

“You’re much to young Mikayla. When your grown up you will be able to.”

“But Kala did and she’s not a grown up.”

Meru cringed inwardly. “Kala is a teenager honey. Her body can have babies but she’s not quite grown up yet. If a girl has a baby when she’s a teenager, she needs her parent’s help because she isn’t ready to care for the child yet. I had Kala & Mira when I was a teenager and I needed Gramma & Grampa’s help to raise them until I was grown up. Kala will need mine and daddy’s help till she’s grown up.”

“Can I have one when I’m a teenager then? You and Daddy can help me.”

“Mikayla my dear. We’ll discuss that when you are older. For now, you can help mommy look after her babies, okay?”

“Sure.” Mikayla responded, satisfied her Mom wasn’t saying no. And her mom was going to let her help with the other babies when they were born. “Can I help Kala with her’s too?”

Kala looked over at her sister. “If mom says yes, then you can. Mira’s already helping me though and Mom doesn’t have anyone to help her with her babies.”

[2am]

Kala awoke, hearing a small cry from her daughter in the crib nearby. She’d been enjoying the first good nights sleep since the twins were born, and had been hoping to sleep all night. Looking at the clock, ship’s time being 2am, Kala groggigly climbed out of bed and went over to Hayley. Picking the girl up, Kala went back to her bed and lay down with a propped up pillow. Hayley was fussing and didn’t settle down until Kala started nursing her, then she settled right down. Drifting partly to sleep, Kala let Hayley nurse while she dozed.

Micheal must have heard his sister fussing becuase almost as soon as Kala was done with Hayley, he wanted to be held and fed. Trading places, Kala nursed him, dozing again, until he was happy, before slipping him back into his crib.

[8am]

Kala awoke to her sister standing over her. “Morning Sleepy head.” Mira grinned.

“Let me sleep Sis,” Kala grumbled, rolling over. “The twins were up all night wanting to be held and fed.”

“Mom says breakfast is ready.”

“Tell her I’m sleeping,” Kala growled, rolling over and closing her eyes.

A few minutes later Kala heard somebody come into her room and sit down on the edge of her bed. “I’m sleeping Mira.”

Meru gently stroked her daughter’s head. “It’s mom Kala. I just came up to see if you were okay.”

“Tired. The twins were up every two hours fussing. If Hayley wasn’t wanting a feed, Micheal was wanting to be held.”

“Welcome to motherhood Kala,” Meru smiled, leaning down and kissing her daughter. “You and Mira were like that for the first month after you were born. This my dear, is the hard part of being a mother. But you’ll do okay Kala.”

Meru stood a bit unsteadily. “Snooze for another hour and I’ll send your sister up to help bring the twins down. Your teacher left some homework for you to do if your up to it. And breakfast will be waiting when you come down.”

[hour later]

Mira quietly came up the stairs to see if Kala was awake yet. Seeing her sister sitting in bed with Michael, Mira entered the room. “I’m sorry Kala. I didn’t know Mom was letting you sleep in. You want me to take Hayley down?”

“It’s okay Mira. I just didn’t get a lot of sleep last night as both twins were fussing like every two hours most of the night. Michael’s just about done nursing. I just have to find something to wear.” She already had something in mind that her mom had shown her was cute but also easy to adjust when one of the twins needed nursing.

As Michael finished, she placed him down on the bed while she changed. Once clothed, Kala picked him up again, with the nursing blanket her mother gave her, and followed Mira down the stairs.

Going to down into the common area, Kala tried to stifle a yawn. “Morning Mom.” she smiled tiredly at her mother as she went over to the chair and plopped down in it. Placing Michael on her chest, Kala placed the blanket over his head and let him nurse

Mira sat holding Hayley, amazed at how small and fragile she was but also enjoying the quietness of holding her niece in her arms as the girl slept. She took the glass her mother offered her and Kala and took a sip.

END.
