BACKPOST - Like Mother, Like Daughter - Kala's Day - Pt 2

Posted on Mon Feb 27th, 2017 @ 10:47am by Lieutenant Alex Walker & Meru Walker

1,590 words; about a 8 minute read

Mission: Behind Closed Doors
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: Two Days after arrival at Starbase

OLD:

“Sure Mom.” Kala replied, she was kinda thankful that her mother was keeping the visitors to a minimum for now. As her eye’s began to droop, the nurse came around and moved the twins to their cribs. Dr Harris was finished by now and as she drifted off, Kala could feel herself being moved into recovery. The lights dimmed and soon she was out.

NEW:

[Next Morning]

Meru and Alex stepped into sickbay with Mira in tow. Seeing Kala propped up in bed, both babies in her arms, Mira ran over to her sister. “Mom said you’d.” She looked at both babies, “Wow. They’re cute Kala.” Seeing them for the first time she was a little jealous of her sister but pushed that aside.

Kala grinned at her sister. “Here, hold Hayley while I finish nursing Michael.” As Mira sat down, Kala passed Hayley to her. “Hold her head in the crook of your arm, just like, perfect.” Kala looked down at Michael who was firmly latched on, “Michael seems to want to nurse more then his sister.”

Alex looked at his daughter nursing and her sister holding the other child. Standing over her, he gave Kala a hug. “Mom says you handled the births like a real trooper Kala.” Looking at both of his grandchildren, Alex smiled. “And who do we have here?”

Kala gently stroked Michael’s head. “This little guy is Michael, and Mira is holding his older sister Hayley.”

“Michael & Hayley. I like the names.” Alex gave Meru’s hand a squeeze, who was by now standing beside Alex, she was at most a month behind Kala, maybe a few weeks if their two decided to show their heads early. This though was Kala’s moment to shine. They both knew what was in store for Kala over the next year.

[later that day]

Dr Harris came in and did one final check on the twins and their mother. “Looking good Kala. If your up to it I see no reason you can’t head home.” He handed her a small piece of paper, “Your mother will already know what to do but for the next little while I want you to rest. Spend time with your little ones and your family.”

Mira looked at her sister. “Ready Sis?”

Kala had been ready to go for the past hour but had been waiting for Dr Harris’ okay to leave. “Ready. And thank you Dr Harris.” She nodded to her sister who handed her a small bag.

“I’ll let you dress. Your parents are outside when your ready.” He looked at Mira. “Kala is not to carry the twins when they are in their carrier. She can hold them all she wants but no heavy lifting for the next two weeks. She needs to time to heal.”

“Yes sir.” Mira replied.

Dr Harris left the girls alone. Kala opened the bag and took out an outfit. “I figured you’d want something you couldn’t wear after you were pregnant. I know how much you missed that outfit.”

Kala grinned at her sister. “You know me too well,” Kala remarked as she began changing out of the medical garment and into the yoga outfit that she’d enjoyed wearing before her (ex)boyfreind had gotten her pregnant. Despite the bit of tummy she still had, she had just carried twins for six months, Kala felt pretty again in her outfit.

Give it a month or two and she’d work off the excess weight she’d put on and she’d be back to chasing boys in no time. This time though, she was taking the shots her mother had mentioned when she first found out. As cute as her babies were, there was no way was she was going to go through that again till she’d found a guy who’d stick around.

“So what was it like Kala? Giving birth?” Mira asked.

“Mom wasn’t joking when she said it felt like pushing out a bowling ball. Imagine the worst tummy cramps you’ve had, they were nothing like these.” Kala replied as she continued changing. “Hayley felt like she was going to rip me open when she made her appearance, the pain was that bad.”

Kala looked at her sister. “How Mom does it again and again I don’t know. But I do know how she felt when we were born. And they were worth each minute of the last six months. Maybe that’s why Mom goes through this.”

“She loves Dad, that’s for sure. And I think she’s going to have more after these two.” Kala lowered her voice. “Mom confided in me that she wants to keep having babies till she can’t. Dad doesn’t seem to mind from what she said.”

“More?” Mira asked. “There’s already four of us, well six after Mom pops, and she want’s more?”

“Yup.” Kala remarked, finishing slipping into her clothes. She picked up Hayley and placed her in the first carrier, settling her daughter before she continued talking with Mira. “For me though, two is enough for now. I asked Mom to get me on the shots when it was okay to do so. No way I’m repeating that with a guy like Roger again.” Kala looked at her sister for a second. “You are on them as well right?”

Mira nodded. “At least for now.”

Kala nodded. “I know your a bit jealous Mira but don’t be. The part at the front is fun, and walking around with a cute bump is as well, but this last part is anything but, and don’t forget, I now have two babies completely dependent on me. Try going on dates with a guy, knowing he knows any romantic involvement means he’s an instant dad. Lot of guys can’t handle it, Roger among them.”

Kala frowned. “Some guys just want sex, they could care less about babies. Stay on the shots, okay Sis?” Kala knew her sister wanted to be just like her, even going so far as to get pregnant if that’s what it took.

“I will.” Mira responded, not completely convinced. Kala sounded just like their mother then and it couldn’t be as bad as they made it out to be?

Meru poked her head around the corner. “Ready Kala?”

“Almost. Mira, can you take Hayley?” Micheal quickly joined his sister in a small carrier. She hiked the small bag Mira used to bring her clothes in. Hefting her son, Kala walked out with Mira.

She gave Dr Harris a little wave as they left. Walking down the hallway, Kala looked up at her Mom. “I guess the hard part’s over?” She knew full well it wasn’t but wanted to talk with her mom as they went down the few decks to her quarters.

Meru shook her head. “Not really Kala. In some ways having the baby is the easy part, now you are responsible to raise them. As hard as that is, and not everyone will agree with me on this, being a mother is the most rewarding thing I ever did.” She glanced at Mira. “You two were worth every sleepless night, every midnight feeding, and I’d do it all over again. Which is why,” She smiled at them both as she’d overheard Kala tell Mira about her & Alex’s plans, “Your father and I plan to have several more before we’re done.”

Meru’s voice turned serious for a moment, “However, I expect you both to be careful okay?”

Mira nodded. “Okay.” She glanced down at Hayley who was fast asleep with a little smile on her face, “You and Dad want more?”

“As odd as it may seem in this day and age, yes Mira, we do.” She paused. “Now that Kala has her own, we may have to change those plans a little.”

Keying in the codes to their quarters, Meru stepped in first. “Your father is out with Sean & Mikayla so you both have a little bit to sit quietly and rest before everyone shows up. Kala, I want you to go sit in my chair.” She frowned when she noticed the top her daughter was wearing. “You’ll need something to nurse with Kala. I’ll be back in a minute.”

A minute later, Meru came back with a small blanket that both girl’s recognized. “Mira, I want you to watch as you’ll be helping your sister.” She turned to Kala who was by now sitting in her mother’s chair. “Discreetly nursing twins in public is difficult so you’ll have to nurse one at a time. In the privacy of your room or the nursery, feel free to nurse both if you want, just anytime you’re around any family but me or your sister, or in public, one at a time and use this blanket.”

Kala nodded. Picking up Hayley, Kala positioned her daughter on her chest as she had in the hospital. Meru went and placed the blanket over her shoulder, covering the baby and her daughters chest. “Now that you’re covered, you can nurse.”

Kala discreetly shifted her top so she could nurse Hayley. Meru watched, satisfied her daughter had the hang of it. Kala’s satisfied look as she lay back and closed her eyes told her Kala was doing well, tired but okay.
