Preserving The Past
Location: Starfleet Listening Post 489
[Federation Listening Post 489 - Epsilon Beta Sector]
Lieutenant Chloe Pearson yawned as she stepped through the doors into the cramped control room. The hexagonal room resembled that of a small starship bridge, for of the walls being flanked by various consoles. A small viewscreen on the other, opposite the wall where the door was located.
"Morning," she said before taking a sip of her coffee. Petty Officer Cressall turned in his seat and smiled.
"Morning Chloe. Sleep well?" He asked.
"As well as always," Chloe replied. "You know how cramped the crew quarters are." She laughed.
Cressall laughed in return. "Yeah, small bunks in a shared dormitory. Let me guess, Kavar's snoring kept you awake again?"
Chloe scrunched her face. "How'd you guess..."
It was at that very moment that Kavar entered the room. The small Tellarite looked at the two Humans and grunted. "Morning." Is all he said before heading over to the engineering station.
Chloe gave Cressall an exasperated look. "Well, now that everyone's here. What do we have?" She asked.
"Nothing out of the unusual." Cressall reported. "A slight chatter on comm channels. It seems the Klingon Defence Force is conducting fleet exercises near H'atoria. They seem to be on high alert since the whole 'return of the Iconians' things."
Kavar grunted from his seat.
"You okay over there Kavar?" Chloe asked turning to look over at the engineer.
Kavar didn't turn in his chair as he tapped away on his console. "The Iconians are back. Sounds like propaganda to me. A way to scare the people. It wouldn't surprise me if some big shot Admiral made it all up. They're simply a myth." He complained.
"Right..." Chloe said in response. "Anyways, we should be careful. It's not like this is a starbase or anything. We're a little listening post..."
"I know." Kavar interjected. "We're all alone out here in deep space, middle of absolutely no where. Hell, we only have two tiny phaser turrets, a damn shuttlecraft could overpower this pathetic excuse of a listening post. We're nothing but a glorified satellite!"
Chloe was about to tell Kavar to shut up and stop complaining, a daily ritual; however Cressalls console started beeping. He turned back to face it a d his eyes opened wide . "Chloe, look at this!"
"My God!" She exclaimed. She reached over and punched up the visual sensors on the viewscreen. All three of them watched as strange purple disk like 'holes' in space started to open. "What are those?"
Cressall looked back at his readings. "I'm reading huge subspace distortions. Power readings are off the scale. Whatever it is, they're only half a million kilometres from us. I'm getting some very strange readings here.. "
"Me too." Kavar added. "It looks like a tear in space, but it's not natural that's for sure!"
Then simultaneously several large ships emerged from the purple disks. "I'm reading at least sixteen vessels. Our sensors are bouncing off them. It's like they're deflecting our sensors sweeps. I can't even get a lock on their position."
"Could these be those Herald ships that Starfleet briefed us about?" Chloe asked.
"Possible. They do match the description." Cressall replied.
"Get hold of Starfleet Command. Report their position."
Cressall nodded as his fingers ran across his console. Chloe took a few briskly steps over to the hardly used tactical console. The listening post hardly ever used this console. Chloe had been stationed here for nearly a year and this was the first time it had to ve even considered. "I'm going to raise shields, just in case they come for us."
"I can't get hold of Starfleet. Our long range communications don't seem to be working. I think we're being jammed." Cressall said.
"If they're jamming us. It's probable that they'll attack." Kavar called out .
"Good point. Keep trying to contact the nearest Starfleet Ship. General distress call." Chloe ordered. "Hopefully someone might be able to help. We should at least..."
The entire room shook violently as the Herald ships purple beams struck the tiny outpost. The consoles around the room burst out, throwing the three occupants away from them. The room was instantly filled with smoke and fire. Cressall was blown away from his console, after taking the full force of the blast.
He laid on the deck staring up, his body lifeless. "Cressall!" Chloe shouted as she moved over to him. Kavar had also been thrown away, he grunted in pain holding a badly injured arm.
"We don't stand a chance!" He said.
"My god. What have we awoken?!" Chloe asked outloud as she ran a hand through her blood stained blonde hair.
The Herald ships fired again. The beams of purple light punching straight through the listening post. It was instantly consumed by a huge fireball leaving nothing but a field of debris and broken shards of metal. The Herald ships banked away from the debris. However they did not open their gateways again, this time their long spines seemed to glow before they jumped to Warp speed, their course set for the Amerind system.
They had only one item on their agenda: Complete annihilation.
