That Boy Ain't Right ("Sand Sea Fun & Surf" Backpost)

Posted on Mon May 1st, 2023 @ 5:32am by Lieutenant JG Nozomi Kusuda 'Gemini' & Ensign Sora Kobayashi 'Blank' & Lieutenant Iowa Riverside 'Grey Ghost'

888 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Descent
Location: USS Tokyo (NCC-91101)- Fighter Storage Bay, Deck 18
Timeline: Shortly after "Flight Deck Orientation"

Now this was where Sora felt more in his element- working beneath the fuselage of a Valkyrie, examining the inner-workings of his craft, and making some personal notes as to what he'd need to rewire to improve its performance. And better still, this wasn't just any old Valkyrie 1 that he had become accustomed to working with back on the Hawaii; this was the new-and-improved Valkyrie 1A firmware, so there was now the added challenge of finding innovative new ways to exploit its performance to his advantage.

But then again, when was Sora Kobayashi ever one to back down from the challenge? Those losers on the Hawaii had failed to recognize his genius, and good riddance to them. And besides, the only advice he really needed was from...

He sighed. Shiro.

"Some day, Sister..." he lamented to himself. "Once you finish your studies, we'll fly amongst the stars together... and then no one will be able to stop us..."

"Who you talking to down there, pal?"

Peeking out from under the fuselage, he was greeted by the sight of two women- one blonde, one violette- as they peered over him with a look of curiosity.

Sora scowled. He didn't need this; he didn't need any of them.

"Unless you have something important to discuss with me, I'd suggest you keep moving," he stated before sliding back under the fighter.

"Now, is that the way you talk to yo squadron leader, boy?" The blonde asked in a tone of voice unexpected of one with her skin pigmentation.

Rolling his eyes, Sora calmly set his tool down and slid out from under the fighter, slowly rising to stand at attention. Honestly, he could give a thin one about his squadron leader at this point; he'd likely be butting heads with her anyhow, so why bother?

"I see you've found your assigned fighter already." Iowa said, looking up at the Valkyrie. "And that you've got an eye for modifications. Lucky for you, I ain't some batty dipshit whose going to order you to revert it to stock. Trust me, I had that kind of overbearing boss before, and they ain't fun to deal with."

"And you'd better hope it stays that way," Sora stated firmly. "I have no intention of changing it back."

"I wasn't gonna order you to change it back." The blonde said. "I have a modified fighter myself, and that would be hypocritical of me if I were to order my squad members to fly stock fighters."

"Well, so long as we're in agreement over that matter..." Sora muttered. "Will that be all, Lieutenant, or will I be expected to walk you through the modifications that I've made to my craft?"

While the blonde had already stated that she wasn't some batty dipshit who was going to harp on Sora for exploiting the rules, he was all too aware of the fact that some modifications were subject to a case-by-case analysis, depending on who you were serving under. If it got her out of his hair, then by all means, she was open to have a gander. Not like it would change anything, however; he had already made that issue pointedly clear.

"That'll be all, Ensign." The blonde said. "We'll see how your mods stack up during our joint training exercise with Harley Squadron tomorrow morning at 0800 hours."

Sora very nearly grinned at the mention of a "training exercise," as it meant he'd get the chance to put his new setup into use sooner rather than later. Of course, he refrained from this, as he wanted nothing more than to get these two out of his hair so he could get back to work on his fighter. So instead, he offered nothing more than a gruff nod and awaited the blonde's dismissal.

"Well, I suppose that'll be all, seeing as you're not one in the mood to talk." Iowa sighed. "Kusuda and I will be getting on our way, so... As you were..."

Sora wasn't even remotely disappointed; without so much as a word, he laid back down on the dolley and slid underneath his fighter, where he could blissfully resume tuning it to his specifications.

"So," Nozomi began once the two of them were out of range. "about that new guy..."

"Not much of a talker, is he?" Iowa asked to get Nozomi's opinion to make sure it wasn't just her.

"I mean, I don't know about you, but I was getting some... hostile vibes coming from him," Nozomi remarked. "I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's almost like... well, to put it mildly, it was almost if he was offended with us for bothering him."

"Well, one thing's for sure; that boy ain't right." Iowa sighed. "Let's just hope he's in a bad mood, because attitudes like his are what get people killed."

Nozomi sighed. "Me too, me too..."
