955 words; about a 5 minute read
Mission:
Descent
Location: Security Dept.
Timeline: not too long ago
Amari's continued exploration of her new home took her to deck 11, home to more crew quarters but primarily the ships main security systems ; the firing range, auxillary weapons control, the brig and the chief of tactical and security's office. An area of the ship she wasn't likely to find herself in unless something needed fixing that the security officers couldn't fix by themselves, though she certainly did want to get to know the ships weaponry and the weapons she'd be required to carry as part of an away team if she was ever assigned to one. she'd read up on the 'phaser' technology the federation preferred and it was several magnitudes of power better than anything her own people had.
Lieutenant Zakrin was completing his daily inspection of the security department when he noticed a newcomer in a non-standard uniform. In fact, it wasn't even a Starfleet uniform. Then he remembered reading the memo about an exchange officer joining the Tokyo's crew. As head of security he kept up to date on such things.
"Lieutenant Amari I presume?" he asked in his gravelly voice hoping not to startle the young woman.
Amari turned when a voice called out her name then immediately recoiled in surprise when the owner of the voice turned about to be a towering creature that looked to be entirely made of rock, her defense implant clicked on without her even having to think about it; her left hand twitching slightly as it powered up.
If he’d only had a gold pressed latinum strip for every time he’s seen that look on someone’s face. “I hope I didn’t startle you.” Trennek chuckled, “Have you never seen a Brikar before? I’m Lieutenant Trennek Zakrin, the security chief here. Welcome aboard.”
With the height difference between them being nearly a whole 2 foot Amari took a step back to not have to crane her head back to look up at the man. "I have never met a species that looks anything like what you do."
Trennek shrugged, “I get that a lot.” His eyes narrowed as he seemed to study her, “You’re from Lesra? Is that correct? Has your world joined the Federation yet?”
A ping from her mind impulse unit told Amari her defense implant was at full charge, with a thought she switched it off. "No." she said shaking her head slightly. "I'm here through the officer exchange program."
Trennek nodded, “Your personnel file said as much. It also said you’re in engineering. Are there a lot of differences between our technology and what you have at home?”
"Our technology is quite sophisticated but the Federation’s is quite a lot more, I'm looking forward to getting my hands on some more of it." Amarai told him. "I spent most of my travel time here rooting through everything I could on a runabout."
“Like every good engineer I’ve come to know,” he answered. “Be careful what you wish to get your hands on… I am the security chief after all,” Trennek playfully winked.
"I'll be careful." Amari replied. "I do need to be certified on your phasers, I've used energy weapons before but yours are different."
"Not a problem," Trennek replied, "We can schedule a training and practice session when it's convenient for you. Although, because of this ship's usual missions, we may want to do that sooner rather than later."
"I have already heard that this ship will find itself in interesting and potentially very hostile situations a lot often than most will." Amari said the words of Lt Yuvek still fresh in her mind. "You're right, I should."
"Just let me know when you're ready," Trennek answered, the asked, "Are you familiar with anything besides energy weapons?" He decided it would be a good thing to know just in case.
"I have a tech implant in my hand that functions similar to an ancient Terran weapon called a taser, it delivers an electrical shock on touch that can be powerful enough to knock someone unconscious." Amari replied though she had a feeling that wasn't exactly what Trennek had meant.
"Interesting," Trennek commented, "What about bladed weapons or hand to hand combat? Have you any training with those?"
"I don't really no." Amari said before adding. "We prefer words first then technology before resorting to physical violence."
"So does Starfleet," Trennek sounded earnest and a little sad at the same time, "... but unfortunately, sometimes diplomacy fails," he shrugged his giant shoulders, "... we must defend ourselves and even go on the attack on rare occasion. I'm sure where you're from there's been a fight once in a while?"
"There are some clan rivalries that devolve into fighting every so often," Amari replied. "Most of the clans prefer not to indulge in violence. Clan Karaya run our military and do teach some hand to hand skills."
"That's good," Trennek answered, "One should know how to defend oneself when weapons or other technology," he was referring to energy her implants, "are not available or not functioning."
"They don't extend that teaching to everyone though, I'm clan Karaya by marriage but even then they wouldn't teach me everything." Amari added. "I can fight if I need to."
Trennek thought a moment and then went on, "Let's start with phaser training and target practice. If you decide you want to learn more, let me know. If I can't teach you directly, I know there are others on this ship that can."
Amari smiled slightly. "That's great, I don't know what shift pattern I'll be assigned to yet but as soon as I can be available I'll be ready to learn."
Trennek nodded, "We'll be ready for you."
