Personal History Born on Risa, Jesse was the child of Bex Dinh, a tourism director, and Commander Jon Saint Leon, then on temporary shore leave from the USS Melbourne. Bex did not inform Commander Leon of her pregnancy until several years into Jesse's life; having decided to raise their son on her own. Jesse spent those years living in resorts and hotels on Risa, with all the enjoyments a kid could wish for at his disposal. Bex spoiled Jesse for anything he wanted, she gained immeasurable joy from seeing her child so happy. She would often say that Jesse was the ultimate gift.

When Commander Leon returned to Risa several years later and discovered Jesse' existence, he was initially cold towards his son, out of disbelief and distrust for his sudden status as a father. He especially disapproved of Jesse's spoiled lifestyle, believing he should be in school and not playing games all day. Bex didn't disagree but she just loved to see Jesse happy. As it happened, Bex was called upon to travel afar to secure an exclusive client, so she allowed Cmdr Leon to take Jesse onboard the Melbourne while she was away. Jesse was exited at first - having barely left Risa for most of his young life. Now he was going to travel amongst the stars.

After a week onboard the Melbourne, however, Jesse found it hard to adjust. He was used to doing whatever he wanted, seeking entertainment over education. His father also struggled to adapt to his role, feeling a lack of connection to his son. Jesse was intrigued by the big, bright ship, and all the people with their important jobs, but none of them wanted to play with him. And they never let him touch the consoles. Finally getting bored and restless, young Jesse tried to run away, managing to elude security all the way to the cargo bay before being stopped. It was a hard lesson in boundaries, something Bex had rarely taught him.

Jesse's father never yelled at him, in fact barely yelled at all. Jesse found that the Commander still gained respect from those around him despite not being authoritarian. Instead, his father redirected Jesse's energy into games and activities that would actually develop his skills, such as problem solving, hand-eye coordination, patience, and a lot of running around. Jesse soon realized he liked to learn new skills and show them off, using his boundless energy to master the challenges set by his father.

When the day came for Jesse to return to Risa, he announced he would like to share his time between his parents instead. Bex was disheartened at first, believing she had pushed away her son, but Jesse explained he wanted to experience life outside of Risa. He began to study and took on a tutor, eventually joining the school system both on Risa and onboard the ship. He also began several growth spurts, gaining height quickly around 13 years of age. Some kids were intimidated by his height, so Jesse took a deliberately softer approach and joking attitude to put people at ease.

During his teen years, he began to excel at sports and physical activities, he found this to be the most captivating for his mind. He was never going to be a book-smart Scientist, but he could learn the rules of a game quickly and find strategies to help win. He was deft at team games, always coming up with the plays and moves for others to follow, finding weaknesses in the opposition. He loved the moving battlefield of rugby league, but his tall and lanky body didn't lend itself to participating in the very physical game. Still, he impressed his high school teachers and coaches with his tactical prowess. Bex would try to make every game that she could, to show her support.

Now a young adult, Jesse had taken onboard his mother's Risian gift of the gab and love of life, along with his father's stoic calm and passion for learning. He gained recommendations from his tutors on Risa and the USS Melbourne, to be invited to interview for the Starfleet Academy upon his graduation from high school. Years of watching the officers onboard the Melbourne had given Jesse the inspiration to join the service and to travel the stars. Commander Leon warned him it would be tough, and Bex conveyed her fears for her boy getting killed in the line of duty, but Jesse in his typical casual style told them both not to worry - he's got this.

Despite his confidence, Jesse almost was not accepted into the Academy. His relaxed demeanor with a healthy dose of over-confidence had actually dissuaded the admission team from accepting him, believing he didn't take it seriously enough and that he was too arrogant. The rejection hit Jesse like a ton of tritanium. His father was disappointed but assured Jesse he could try again next year. His mother Bex, however, had never taken no for an answer before, and used her Risian persuasion skills to gain a second interview. This time, Jesse showed how serious he was about education and learning, and especially on the importance of developing oneself. This time, Jesse was granted a spot in the Academy for the class of 2389.

His Academy years was eye and mind opening for Jesse. So many different subjects, so many different people. There were a lot of visitors on Risa, but that had nothing compared to the diversity found at SFA. He leaned on his Risian host person to get to know as many people as possible, again having to work extra hard due to his above-average height to disarm others. He also discovered a recreational activity he could do at any time - working out. Long tired of being called a string bean, Jesse hit the gym with his usual enthusiasm and by second year had developed a more muscular frame.

Jesse's propensity to throw himself - literally and spiritually - into any kind of physical activity quickly saw him picking up elective courses in Security Detail during the Academy. He liked the rough and tumble of it; the strategy behind directing others to take down a target, the requirement to run, jump, and dodge. He joined the Academy's rugby team for the winter and took a forward position, always running full speed at the opposition whether he had the ball or not. All of that machismo was deftly dissuaded by Jesse's otherwise mild-mannered demeanor. It was hard to be scared at a guy who was laughing as he tackled you. Big Friendly Giant they called him.

He struggled with the academia portion of the Academy. Science, Engineering, Medicine. He took the courses, satisfactorily completed them, but never found passion or much interest in those pursuits. It was clear by year three that Jesse's skills were meant for Security and Tactical. He began running training drills and developing his own squad of cadets then organizing team tournaments in their free time. He learnt hand to hand combat and weapon skills during lunch breaks. He was first to greet the San Francisco sunrise while running on the shoreline. He graduated as a yellow shirt in 2389, with Bex and Commander Leon cheering him on from the stands.

Jesse's first appointment after graduation was onboard the USS Pandora during their inaugural tour of the Inconnu Expanse. He was under the command of a very strict and serious Lieutenant Griffin, who never understood Jesse's jovial spirit. Griffin valued discipline and militarism in his squads, and never gave Jesse the opportunity to advance into a leadership position for the first 18 months of his posting, viewing Jesse as a jokester. It was only when Griffin transferred off ship and a new Chief was put in place that Jesse was given the opportunity to lead a squad of his own. He was eventually promoted to Ensign. However, it was decided to give Jesse a new start on a different ship, leading to his transfer to the USS Belvoir.

Onboard the Belvoir, Jesse was able to show his prowess in tactical strategies and squad leadership; relying upon his experience in the Academy to help develop his own dedicated squad around him. They trained, patrolled, studied, and rested as a unit. But it was always fun, too, they joked around and got on well, something Jesse found vital to their success as a team. He didn't want to lead through fear or disciple, but through mateship. As a result, his squad aced their requirements, had the highest stats in the department, and performed better at every drill. This gained Jesse a promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade and a role as shift leader.

Soon after, Jesse was transferred again to a more active vessel, the USS Tokyo. This time, he was one of three shift leads and a co-Assistant Chief. The other AC's didn't much care for Jesse's approach - a feeling he was used to by now - and maintained a professional distance from him. But the Chief saw potential in Jesse and kept him around, despite the AC's complaints of his apparent "unprofessional" attitude. The Chief had seen the results Jesse could achieve with his approach and wanted to see if he could replicate his success on the Belvoir on the Tokyo. Unfortunately, the Chief was killed in action during a mission, and Jesse lost not only a mentor but one of his few supporters. Jesse at the other AC's had to share the leadership of the Security department until a new Chief was announced, something the others resented.

There was much surprise therefore when Captain Aisaka decided to follow the Chief's recommendation and take a chance on Jesse took, promoting him to Lieutenant and Chief of Security for the USS Tokyo...
