Personality & Traits

General Overview Having lost his mother, father, and step-mother before the age of 15, Ensign Kobayashi has become reclusive and somewhat detached from reality, having spent most of his adolescence playing MMOs (namely, "StarHawk," a Starfighter simulator created by a group of Peregrine pilots from the Dominion War) with his step-sister, Shiro. However, in spite of his somewhat withdrawn nature, he his highly intelligent, having spent years mastering the mechanics of "StarHawk" to play to his advantage. It was in part this desire to learn the finer intricacies of his virtual craft- both inside and out- that inspired him (and eventually Shiro) to try it out for real and apply for Starfleet Academy.

However, years of seclusion have gotten to his head, and his intense, almost competitive desire to hone in on his piloting skills have fostered something of an ego complex, which often puts him at odds with his superiors. Put simply, if he sees an opening to do something better, he will seize upon the opportunity, regardless of whether or not he has the proper clearance to do so. This sense of reckless abandon is compounded even further by the fact that his line of work has kept him separated from Shiro- the only person he really trusts- for extended periods of time. Some would even argue that his attitude slowly grows worse the longer he spends away from Shiro...
Strengths & Weaknesses +Highly (perhaps dangerously) intelligent.
+Keen interest in learning the inner and outer workings of his craft.
+Deeply protective of his Step-sister, Shiro.
-Sometimes treats life like one big game.
-Reclusive and withdrawn.

Sora's Step-Sister, Shiro, is currently attending Starfleet Academy; he hopes that once she's graduated, the two of them will finally be reunited.
Hobbies & Interests -eGaming (Namely, the Starfighter Simulator MMO "StarHawk")
-Tuning his craft's performance.
-Reading up on technical manuals

Personal History Sora Kobayashi was born July 7, 2371, as the first and only child of Wataru Kobayashi and his first wife, Renora. When he was just two years old, Renora was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, and for most of the time he knew his mother, she was confined to bed as she underwent treatment for her illness. But knowing that her time was running out, Renora elected to make the most out of her time with Sora.

When Sora was 10, one of his friends boasted about getting the chance to play his older brother's account of "StarHawk," a wildly popular MMO that had just been released. With the Dominion War still fresh in the minds of many, a group of Veterans who had flown Peregrines during the war had gotten together with a triple-A developer to create what was billed as "one of the most intensive starfighter simulators ever put to market." Curious, he asked his mother if he could have a copy of "StarHawk" for his birthday. In spite of the fact he was still a few years to young at the time, Renora was now on her last legs, and with the possibility she would not live to see her son's 11th birthday, she decided it was the least she could do to make him happy, if just one last time. And so, for his 11th birthday, Sora was surprised when his mother gifted him with not just a copy of the game, but a high-tech gaming PC to go along with it.

Renora Kobayashi lost her fight to cancer the following month; devastated from the loss, Sora became withdrawn and turned to "StarHawk" in his grief. It would soon become one of his most cherished possessions.

when Sora was 13, his father finally worked up the strength to move on and begin dating again. It wasn't long before he met Haruka Furutani, a fellow widow who had lost her husband to a skiing accident the year prior. The two of them quickly hit off, and within seven months they were wed. Carried over from Haruka's previous marriage was her six-year-old daughter, Shiro, who was herself struggling coming to grips with her father's passing. Feeling a sense of pity for what the younger girl was going through, especially given her young age, Sora made a personal vow to dedicate himself to Shiro as if she were his flesh-and-blood sister. The two of them quickly grew to become inseparable, often spending long hours in Sora's bedroom playing "StarHawk."

However, just as it seemed that things were finally looking up, double tragedy struck when both Wataru and Haruka were killed in a car accident, leaving the two step-siblings orphaned and deeply despondent. With no living relatives to care for them, the two were placed into foster care, where they became even more withdrawn than they had previously. At this point, "StarHawk" was becoming more just a coping mechanism; it bordered on an obsession, their last true escape from the dismal reality they now found themselves living in.

And so they played; they competed in online tournaments and gradually wormed their way up through the ranks; they spent hours reading up on forums in search of every last trick to give them the upper hand; they even bought Peregrine technical manuals from Starfleet surplus auctions to try and learn more about the tolerances and performance capabilities of their virtual craft. Such was their level of dedication that they began to draw considerable interest in the "StarHawk" eSports community.

When Sora was 18, he was quite surprised when he received a phone call one day from a representative for a major "StarHawk" eSports team who had managed to track him through his account, and was hoping to potentially recruit him to their team. While the offer was a dream come true for Sora, but by now he and his sister had become so withdrawn that they were socially anxious around other people, so he regretfully declined the offer. However, it soon got him thinking- if he was now so good at the game that he was seriously being considered for the big time, perhaps it was not so far-fetched an idea to try out piloting for real? He spent some time considering his options, and after some careful deliberation as to whether or not this was the right career path for him, he eventually let Shiro in on his plans to go into Starfleet. Shiro, for one, made it clear that wherever her "brother" went, she would go as well, and once she eventually came of age, she, too would join Sora in Starfleet.

His resolve bolstered by Shiro's report, Sora applied for Starfleet Academy in the spring of 2289; the experience was nerve-wracking for him, as never in his life had he done something of this caliber. However, by some stupid miracle, he managed to skirt by on the first attempt with the bare minimum number of points required to be accepted. Sora and Shiro were elated when they received his letter of acceptance, but joy quickly turned into anxiety when the revelation set in that Sora would, for the first time since Wataru and Haruka were married, be separated from Shiro. The prospect was deeply unappealing to the both of them, and in the days leading up to the beginning of the 2289 semester, Sora very nearly considered dropping out. However, a few strong words of encouragement from Shiro were enough to change his mind, at least for the short term.

During his four years in the Academy, Sora failed to get along with his fellow cadets, and even went so far as to punch one when he made the mistake of invading Sora's private space. Not helping his case was his attitude behind the controls of a fighter. Once he was properly familiarized with the controls, he began looking into new ways to "optimize" his in-field performance- which included some risky flight maneuvers that no doubt landed him in the hot seat.

This sense of reckless abandoned earned him something of a reputation as a "problem" student, and even his counselors reported difficulty in getting through to him. His one solace from all of this was Shiro, and as soon as classes let out, he'd get in touch with her and the two would converse long into the night.

With the anti-social attitude that had preceded him, it wasn't exactly surprising when Sora graduated at the bottom of his class, in spite of the fact that he had gotten consistently good grades. While teachers lauded his intellect, pervading concerns regarding his temper had ultimately hurt his reputation. And their concerns were well-routed, for upon his assignment to the Nebula-Class USS Hawaii, his penchant for disobedience only seemed to be growing in terms of boldness. If he saw an opportunity to do something better, her did it, often without his squadron leader's permission. Worse still, when his squadron leader would chew him out for his actions, he had a habit of retaliating, insisting that his maneuvers were "more efficient" then what was protocol. This lashing out at his superiors often resulted in his being confined to his quarters, but as far as he was concerned, this played to his advantage, as he'd spend his time in confinement playing "StarHawk" and conversing with Shiro via chat groups.

After another verbal altercation, his supervisors finally had enough and arranged to have him transferred to the USS Tokyo (NCC-91101), effective immediately; they were quoted in the official transfer orders as saying that Sora could "rot in hell."
