Personality & Traits

General Overview Andorians as a whole have a genetic predisposition toward violent behaviour, and while Telim is no exception to this rule, the structured life of a Starfleet officer helps him tame his temper. While he can be angered easily, he tends to bottle it up; venting it in a safe outburst once off-duty and in his private quarters - a practice considered normal and healthy amongst Andorians serving away from their homeworld. Outwardly, this can give him an air of eerie calm when a situation angers him, as he maintains his true feelings behind a facade.
Strengths & Weaknesses Heightened analytical skills when under duress
Handles pressure extremely well

Easily angered, though that anger is kept in check
Prone to outbursts when in private, to vent off pent-up emotions
Ambitions Telim's main aim in life is to be a productive member of society; and for him, that means to actively be doing something practical; whether that be building starship engines, writing software to control the main computer, or heading out into the galaxy to actively seek to increase the knowledge of the Federation, or protect its borders. Purely administrative duties, though he can see the use in them, do not fulfill his need to be productive - nor do dead-end assignments that some might consider an 'easy ride' through life. Somewhere at the back of his mind is the vague idea that it would be nice to captain his own starship one day, but it is not his driving goal in life.
Hobbies & Interests Telim has had an interest in ancient fighting styles and weapons - originally those from Andor, but as he has travelled the galaxy, so has his interest in historical forms of martial arts. He is proficient with both the Andorian weapons of the Ushaan-tor and the Chaka, and whilst at the Academy studied some historical European martial arts, particularly those around weapons such as the longsword and the spear. He has had a few short attempts at using a bat'leth on the holodeck, but has found the style difficult to master. While the study of these ancient weapon forms has some practical use in terms of fitness and combat ability, Telim mostly studies them for the historical value they hold; learning about how a weapon was used can teach one about the culture of a planet at that point in time, and how the properties of that weapon and the technology available at the time influenced fighting styles.

Outside of his historical weapons interest, Telim likes to keep up-to-date on the latest specs issues from the Starfleet Corps of Engineers; new starships, warp drive systems, computer systems, and so on. The breadth of data available means he is only able to obtain a surface-level understanding of each specification, but sometimes that is enough to prompt further research if a particular key feature of a system he has read about previously becomes useful to whatever current situation he and his ship find themselves in. He also enjoys listening to - and often participating in - the conversations of the engineering staff of whatever starship he is serving on, even whilst not serving in that department himself.

Personal History Born on Andor to a bond group consisting of a Starfleet officer, a diplomat's aide and two civil servants of the Andorian government, Telim was named after an ancestor of his clan, who had also served Starfleet in the 23rd century. Given that namesake, and that his thavan (father, for lack of any better translation) from whom he attained his clan name from was also a serving Starfleet officer, it was always expected that Telim would follow that path as well, although the path to choose another career was never closed to him. He was raised by his thavan and zhavey; the two members of his parental bondgroup who had formed a life bond with the desire to have and raise a child, whilst his shreya and charan both returned to their own careers in the civil service, maintaining only distant relations with Telim. This was a fairly normal arrangement, given the Andorian requirement for a bondgroup of all the four sexes in order to conceive a child and the hot-headed nature of Andorians that often made it difficult for that many to get along well enough to form a full family unit. Where two Andorians have a desire to have a child, it is expected that others who do not have either the desire or a pre-existing bondgroup agree to 'make up the numbers', as it were; with no long-term obligations to the raising of that child. All in all, as he later attended the Academy, Telim felt that this kind of upbringing made it easier to relate to his classmates from the more common dual-gender species when they talked about their childhoods.

It had very nearly been a single parent upbringing however, as the Battle of Wolf 359 occurred a mere two years after Telim's birth, and his thavan Tethohl was serving aboard the Melbourne at the time; though the ship was destroyed, Tethohl was one of the lucky crew members to escape the battle with his life, later able to return to Andoria to help raise his thei.

Much of the rest of Telim's upbringing was fairly standard for an Andorian, up until the Dominion War broke out in 2373, when he was 8 years old. Again, his father managed to make it through the conflict alive, and by 2379 he had risen to the rank of Commander and was first officer of the Hemmingway when it toed the crippled USS Enterprise back to Earth following the coup d'etat by Shinzon and the Remans. Tethohl remained in service on active Starfleet vessels just long enough to see his thei join Starfleet Academy in 2383, taking a semi-retirement to serve in a more administrative capacity on Earth, with his zh'yi (wife), Telim's zhavey (mother) Ethyre, who by that point had risen to be a diplomatic aide working at the Palais de la Concorde for the Federation Council in Paris.

Telim progressed through his studies at the Academy in solid fashion; he wasn't the top of his class in most areas, but he was in the top 10% for most of the subjects he excelled at. Upon his graduation in 2387, he was assigned as an engineering officer aboard the USS Sacramento. His first posting aboard the Sacramento was filled with a variety of tasks and roles, with Telim not fitting into any particular specialisation, and serving more as a general-purpose engineer. This meant that he was assigned to many different duties aboard the ship, including a few duties that fell outside of the engineering department when the need arose, which often included assisting the operations department. After two years of serving aboard the Sacramento, Telim applied and received a promotion to a vacant bridge officer slot aboard the Repulse. Though the assignment wasn't as a member of the ship's senior staff, Telim served primarily on the beta shift, occasionally filling in as a day shift relief officer, ensuring that the ops station was always manned even when the senior staff had other duties to attend to.

The Repulse was an older ship of the Excelsior class line, and so was rarely assigned to what might be considered overly exciting duties. The ship itself was older than Telim was, and though it had been refit a couple of times throughout its life, the constant changing of systems was beginning to show, and the ship required a constant hand to ensure that small glitches were dealt with before they became a problem, making it even more important to have the ops stations staffed at all times. Telim's commanding officer in the department at the time held to the feeling that an operations officer is doing their job well when the rest of the crew don't even realise they're doing their job at all; sensor malfunctions were to be caught and resolved before they caused a false alert on the tactical console, and faulty circuits in the replicators were to be replaced before the loss of one replicator became a hindrance to the crew. Whilst this was all useful experience for the young lieutenant, Telim craved to be put to more useful tasks, and when an assignment on a Galaxy class starship became available - still some of the most prestigious ships to serve on in Starfleet decades after their initial introduction, he applied for the posting.

The USS Frontier was an upgraded version of the original Galaxy class; constructed after the end of the Dominion War, and so bearing all of the upgrades that had been devised since and none of the regular system malfunctions the Repulse's operations officers knew her for. It was also assigned to far more front-line duties; participating in several exploration tours - including the odd first contact mission - as well as patrolling the borders of Federation space. Telim saw combat on a number of occasions during his tour of service aboard the Frontier; taking the ops station on the bridge for a few of them whilst the chief operations officer was off-ship, and at one point when ops was otherwise staffed and Telim was on relief duty, took the tactical station when the ship's senior tactical officer was incapacitated by an overloading relay. In 2393, on his tenth anniversary of joining Starfleet Academy, Telim was granted a promotion to full lieutenant, and assumed duties as the Frontier's assistant operations officer, helping his senior officer organise the department of the large starship. The role felt similar to his previous posting aboard the Repulse, in that he felt he was doing his job well when his superior officer didn't realise he was doing it; ensuring that personnel and supply issues were dealt with where possible before they reached the senior staff's desks, having duty rosters written up and ready for the chief ops officer to simply sign off on, or being ready with whatever information was likely to be necessary in each of the departmental briefings, ensuring that the department - and by extension, the ship - operated smoothly.

His next promotion was the first ship assignment he had been recommended to, rather than applying for himself; Commander Raffen, the first officer of the Frontier recommended him for the vacant chief operations officer posting on the Tokyo upon hearing of that ship's need, and having a record of exemplary crew evaluation reports on file for Telim, knowing that an assignment to another starship in a senior officer position was the only way for the Andorian's career to be able to progress short of waiting for his serving superior officer to retire. Telim accepted the promotion and transfer gratefully, and bid farewell to the Frontier's crew to begin the next challenge of his career aboard the Tokyo.
